Saint Thomas (size of Manhattan, N.Y.) is an island in the Caribbean Sea. Along with the islands of Saint John, Saint Croix, and Water Island, it is a county and constituent district of the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), an unincorporated territory of the United States. Located on the island is the territorial capital and port of Charlotte Amalie.
Creating one of the world’s largest slave enterprises, the Danes colonized the islands in 1666. Hundreds of thousands of slaves were brought from Africa to be shipped to America and other parts of the world (sad). While Danes were the first European nation to abolish slavery in 1802, the practice was in effect until 1849.
In 1917, the United States purchased the territory for $25 million in gold.

I used to have a business in St. Thomas and had a condo at Bolongo Bay. It is a beautiful island.
Wow, lucky you! When we went, St Thomas had the perfect weather. Is it the same all year, or quite humid other times?
It is hard to imagine the Danes – such gracious and caring people – ever involved in the practice of slavery. Interesting history.
I agree.
