It was during my foreign-student days, living in Berkeley, California, when I first heard about this beautiful town in Marin County called Tiburon.
Sweden House
Several years later, a friend, a far relative of mine, Fariba, called and informed me that they had moved to the USA, near me, to Tiburon, California. I went to visit her. Also, I was quite excited to finally see this scenic city. While driving toward her apartment, through hills with beautiful homes, a view of the Cove, Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, and downtown San Francisco across the Bay, I felt as if I were driving through the heavens. For lunch, we went to a café in their cozy little downtown. The café was called Sweden House. It was a little café with the confectionary showcase right at the entry.

Bistro 35
Adjacent to the dining area, there was a small veranda, situated over the water with a 180 degree view of downtown San Francisco. “This is my favorite place,” Fariba told me. I was sold. This was ‘the’ town I was going to retire in. At the café, I ordered their open-faced curried chicken sandwich, which was served with their special recipe house bread, their signature princess cake and a café latte. I frequented the café many, many times over the years. Whenever I had guests from abroad, I took them there. Sweden House closed in 2009 and Bistro 35 opened under new ownership. A year later, Bistro 35 closed and The Boathouse opened.

Each proprietor had good menus and very delicious confectionary. One thing that was not taken down during the changes is a plaque on the veranda wall saying, “Watch your food or the birds will eat it!” After lunch with Fariba, believing in the power of attraction, I bought a postcard of Tiburon and placed it on my refrigerator. The postcard was on my refrigerator for the next 26 years. After 26 years, I no longer needed it on my refrigerator, because I have ‘the’ view from my apartment balcony!

What a fabulous story!! 26 years! Amazing! Tiburon is so beautiful even though it means shark and there are great whites around there~
- Yes, the wait was worth it.
- I don’t believe we have sharks here, the water is too cold. Although there is no beach or place that people can go in the water, we have had National/Int’l?swimming competition from Angel Island to Tiburon. Tiburon sure is beautiful.
