May 5th is Children’s Day, a National Holiday in Japan!
Carp/koi is know to have a great strength and energy to swim upstream. For this reason, koi is chosen as a symbol for Boy’s Day, which is also considered and celebrated as Children’s Day, an important National Holiday in Japan. In Japan, children are regarded as their National Treasure.
- International Children’s Day is on November 20.
- Unfortunately, The United States of America is one of a few countries which do not officially have or observe children’s day.

Hi Fae, what you say is so true and sad, the U.S. does not celebrate Children the way other countries do. I visit family in Italy often and it always amazes me how the whole family embraces the children, they are their treasures. Thank you for the history about Japan. Have a wonderful evening.

Japanese children should have been very happy to have gift twice a year
BTW, in my country, 1-June is International Children’s Day.
I am going to show this to my girls this morning because my oldest daughter is learning about Japan and the importance of koi fish there. I helped the class make koi fish as a volunteer. What a great idea to celebrate kids — they are the future!
